“The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, Because He has anointed Me To preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives And recovery of sight to the blind, To set at liberty those who are oppressed; To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord. Luke 4:18-19Here Jesus publicly announces at the start of his ministry what He is all about, and for what purpose the Spirit of the Lord, or the Holy Spirit, was upon Him.Firstly, to preach the gospel or good news to the poor. What is the good news? I deal with this subject in many places on this site. There are different slants on the message. I do not believe that Jesus generally revealed the full scope of the gospel message to his hearers when He preached on earth, because he generally did not talk to the crowds about his upcoming death and resurrection and the meaning thereof. This was left for the apostles to preach. But this very fact that Jesus announced he came to preach the gospel to the poor suggests that there is gospel content that ought to be preached explicitly even apart from the basic message of forgiveness of sins through the death and resurrection of Christ. Jesus preached “the gospel of the Kingdom” and this involved ESPECIALLY the news that He had come to break satanic strongholds in people’s lives today. This message is still highly relevant today because literal demons are hiding in most people, including Christians, and a lot of the church does not realize it. These demons bring with them enslavement to sinful thought and behavior patterns, terrible sickness, fear and other torments. Many Christians, without realizing it, are still bound in large measure to DOUBT and UNBELIEF, and this is why many gospel promises don’t seem to work in their lives. When it gets down to it, they just don’t believe the promise is for them now.
Faith in Psalm 139
SituationDavid acknowledged that God knows everything, is everywhere, and is the Creator and Author of all life.ObservationDavid recognized that the days of his life were written in God’s book before he was even born.InspirationYou exited the womb uniquely equipped. David states it this way: “My frame was not hidden from You, when I was made in secret, and skillfully wrought in the lowest parts of the earth. Your eyes saw my substance, being yet unformed. And in Your book they all were written, the days fashioned for me, when as yet there were none of them” (Psalm 139:15, 16).Spelunk these verses with me. David emphasizes the pronoun “You” as if to say “You, God, and You alone.” “Made in secret” suggests a hidden and safe place, concealed from intruders and evil. Just as an artist takes a canvas into a locked studio, so God took you into His hidden chamber where you were “skillfully wrought.” Moses used the same word to describe the needlework of the tabernacle’s inner curtains—stitched together by skillful hands for the highest purpose (see Exodus 26:1; 36:8; 38:9). The Master Weaver selected your temperament threads, your character texture, the yarn of your personality—all before you were born. God did not drop you into the world utterly defenseless and empty-handed. You arrived fully equipped. “The days fashioned . . .” Day of birth and day of death. Days of difficulty and victory. What motivates you, what exhausts you . . . God authored—and authors—it all.
Be Bold Preach Jesus Christ
…every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world (1 John 4:3OTo better understand what we just read in our ope-ning scripture, it’s im-portant to read the next verse, which is 1 John 4:4O. It says, “Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.” There’s an antichrist spirit in the world; there’re those who simply hate everything about Jesus, but they’re not a factor, because you’ve already overcome themI would submit to you that our greatest need is to rediscover the gospel of Jesus Christ and to proclaim it. The True GospalWhat Did Jesus Preach?
The predominant focus of mainstream Christianity is the undeserved crucifixion of Jesus Christ, and the subsequent forgiveness of sins that is available through accepting that sacrifice. While this selfless act was and is unquestionably momentous, and its effects exceedingly far-reaching, many would be shocked to find out that the Bible defines the gospel differently than what they have always been told. A thoughtful reading shows that accepting Christ's blood in payment of our sins—as foundationally important as it is—is actually not the focus of the "good news" that He brought and that the apostles continued to preach. In addition to dying for our sins, Jesus Christ came to earth as a messenger from God the Father:Behold, I send My messenger [John the Baptist], and he will prepare the way before Me. And the Lord, whom you seek, will suddenly come to His temple, even the Messenger of the covenant, in whom you delight. Behold, He is coming," says the LORD of hosts. (Malachi 3:1)Jesus did not speak His own words, but the words that the Father gave Him (John 8:38-42; 12:49-50; 14:24). His message was not primarily about Himself, but rather the good news that the Father ordained to be announced on earth. While Jesus Christ was categorically the most important individual ever to walk this earth, the Bible shows clearly that the gospel that Jesus brought was not simply about Himself. Read His statements, and prove this for yourself:» And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all kinds of sickness and all kinds of disease among the people. (Matthew 4:23)» And Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease among the people. (Matthew 9:35)» Now after John was put in prison, Jesus came to Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God, and saying, "The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel." (Mark 1:14-15)» [Jesus] said to them, "I must preach the kingdom of God to the other cities also, because for this purpose I have been sent." (Luke4.43 The announcement of "good news"—the very best news that could be heard today—which the Father gave through Jesus Christ, was about His Kingdom being established on earth.through the blood of the Lamb is necessary.
